PPHUI Initiates a Short Film Festival with a Labor Theme
Jakarta, August 6, 2026 — One way to document the aspirations of workers is through short films. Based on this idea, the Yayasan Pusat Perfilman H. Usmar Ismail (PPHUI) has proposed organizing a short film festival on the theme of labor, inspired by the spirit of May Day, or International Workers' Day.
The proposal was presented during a meeting between PPHUI and the Film Censorship Board of Indonesia (LSF RI) at the LSF office in Jakarta on Thursday (August 6, 2026). The festival will feature short films exploring a range of labor-related issues and workers' aspirations. Through these films, the organizers hope that the issues raised will not remain temporary concerns but will be documented and reach a wider audience.
“We want to provide a platform for the public to express their aspirations through short films. Our hope is that these aspirations will not remain only on the streets but can also be documented and shared with a broader audience,” said Sonny Pudjisasono, President Director of PPHUI.
LSF Chair Naswardi welcomed the initiative, noting that the festival could become a collaborative platform aligned with LSF’s efforts to strengthen film literacy. LSF also expressed its readiness to support the festival through film censorship services, film literacy programs, and outreach activities under the National Movement for a Culture of Self-Censorship (GNBSM).
Going forward, PPHUI and LSF RI will continue discussions on cooperation in organizing the labor-themed short film festival. The festival is intended to provide a platform for the public to express their aspirations through audiovisual works that highlight a variety of labor issues and workers' perspectives.
