Indonesian Films Break into the Global Market, APROFI Issues Important Reminders

Jakarta, 11 March 2026 — In recent years, the development of the national film industry has shown a positive trend. One indicator is that, over the past two years, the number of viewers of Indonesian films in cinemas has exceeded 80 million.

“This shows that public interest in Indonesian films continues to increase,” said Chair of the Indonesian Film Producers Association (APROFI), Edwin Nazir, during the Expert Discussion titled “The Indonesian Film Ecosystem: Challenges and Opportunities,” organized by the Indonesian Film Censorship Board (LSF RI) in Jakarta on Wednesday (11 March 2026).

He also highlighted the success of Indonesian films in entering the global market through digital platforms. Some titles have even ranked first globally among non-English films and entered the Top 10 in 75 countries. “Some industry stakeholders consider that content oversight for films on digital platforms should remain under the authority of LSF. The characteristics of digital platforms differ from television, as viewers actively choose the content they watch,” he explained.

However, he noted that several conditions must be met for Indonesian films to be widely accepted internationally. “A strong film is one that has a local context but presents universal themes that can be understood by audiences from different countries,” he said.

Meanwhile, Director General of Cultural Development, Utilization, and Fostering (PPPK) at the Ministry of Culture, Ahmad Mahendra, emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in strengthening the national film ecosystem, as this effort cannot be carried out by a single party.

“Collaboration is needed between the government, state institutions, and industry stakeholders so that Indonesian cinema can continue to grow amid changes in technology and film distribution patterns,” he stated.

The discussion, moderated by Head of the Censorship Subcommission, Hadi Artomo, is held regularly as part of knowledge-sharing activities among LSF members, censors, and secretariat staff. It aims to enhance understanding of industry dynamics and support the implementation of censorship functions that are more adaptive to technological developments and changes in the film ecosystem.
