Meet Mama Culla, LSF New Mascot
Jakarta — The Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (Lembaga Sensor Film Republik Indonesia / LSF RI) has officially introduced Mama Culla, its newest mascot, still inspired by the Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus), but now represented as a female character. Previously depicted as a male rhino, the mascot has been reimagined to better reflect LSF’s evolving public outreach.
The name Mama Culla is an acronym for Masyarakat Sensor Mandiri: Sadar dan Cerdas Untuk Memilah-Memilih Film sesuai Klasifikasi Usia roughly translated as A Self Censoring Society: Aware and Smart in Choosing Films According to Age Classification. The character is portrayed as a millennial mother (Generation Y), closely connected to everyday life and particularly relatable to young parents. Her role is to gently remind audiences of the importance of choosing age-appropriate content.
Inspired by the protective nature of a Javan rhino mother toward her calf, Mama Culla symbolizes maternal care nurturing, protective, and wise. “Mama Culla also serves as the mascot of the National Movement for a Self Censorship Culture. She embodies a philosophy of protection, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, from exposure to sensitive content,” said LSF Chairman Naswardi during the mascot’s launch at The Club Djakarta Theater in Jakarta on Thursday (December 11, 2025).
Starting January 1, 2026, cinema audiences across Indonesia will see newly redesigned age-classification visuals (telop) displayed before film screenings. These refreshed visuals cover four audience categories and feature collaborations with well known local intellectual properties (IPs):
Funcican for All Ages (SU)
Si Nopal for Teen 13+ (R13)
Emak-Emak Matic for Adult 17+ (D17)
Si Juki for Adult 21+ (D21)
According to Naswardi, LSF remains committed to improving the quality index of viewing literacy, extending its efforts beyond cinema screens.
“Our literacy initiatives won’t stop at theaters. We’ll also bring them into public spaces through public service announcements on trains, OTT platforms, social media, and other shared environments,” he explained.
With Mama Culla at the forefront, LSF aims to strengthen its message of smart, age appropriate viewing making film literacy more relatable, inclusive, and deeply rooted in everyday life. (Nuz)
