LSF and Student Organizations Agree on the Importance of Film Literacy

Jakarta, July 29, 2026 — As one of Indonesia's largest extracurricular student organizations, the Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM) regularly conducts public education programs and campaigns promoting responsible film viewing.

“Our film screening activities have the potential to become an effective platform for public education, particularly for young people,” said Irfani Maulana, Secretary for Media and Communication of the IMM Central Executive Board (DPP IMM), during a visit to the Film Censorship Board of Indonesia (LSF RI) headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).

During the meeting, DPP IMM also expressed concern over the increasing circulation of films that it believes are not suitable for general audiences. Irfani said the organization is therefore seeking to collaborate with LSF RI through public outreach activities under the National Movement for a Culture of Self-Censorship (GNBSM).

LSF Chair Naswardi welcomed IMM's initiative, noting that broader collaboration and stronger partnerships would help expand film literacy efforts across society.

“University students have tremendous potential to contribute to the development of Indonesia's creative industry and the national film ecosystem,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the LSF Censorship Subcommission Hadi Artomo emphasized the importance of obtaining a Film Censorship Approval Certificate (STLS) for every film exhibited to the public.

“It is an essential procedure to ensure that every film has legal recognition and receives legal protection,” Hadi explained. (Kristanti Nerisa/Tal)
