Unexpected Family
Zhong Bufan (Peng Yuchang), a young migrant worker, leaves his hometown to start a new life in Wuhan. There, he meets Ren Jiqing (Jackie Chan), an elderly man living alone who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and has lost his only son. Along with several unrelated individuals Zhong Bufan, Su Xiaoyue (Karlina Zhang), Jia (Pan Binlong), and Jin Zhen (Li Ping), they attempt to care for Ren Jiqing by pretending to be his family.
Behind this act of compassion, Zhong Bufan secretly plans to take Ren Jiqing’s money in order to properly bury his grandmother’s ashes. Unexpected Family marks Taiyan Li’s directorial debut, in which he also serves as the screenwriter. The film explores the perspective of caregivers for Alzheimer’s patients, portraying emotional struggles, moral dilemmas, and human conflicts. Emphasizing humanitarian values and respect for human rights and dignity, the Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (LSF) has classified this film for audiences aged 13 and above.(cha)
