Sugar
Mi-ra (Choi Ji-woo), a hardworking mother, is deeply distressed when she learns that her nine-year-old son, Dong-myeong (Ko Dong-ha), has type 1 diabetes and must undergo daily blood tests. To ease her son’s suffering, she searches for a painless glucose monitoring device, eventually importing Dexcom, which is not yet available in Korea. Out of empathy, Mi-ra also helps other mothers facing similar challenges. However, her actions unintentionally lead to accusations of illegal importation, forcing her to confront legal challenges in her fight for her child and other diabetes patients.
Based on a true story, this film directed by Choi Sin-choon presents a psychological drama about a woman navigating emotional pressure and personal struggles. What initially appears to be an ordinary situation gradually develops into a tense and unsettling experience, as the boundaries between love, dependence, and emotional distress become increasingly unclear. Through an intimate approach and a restrained atmosphere, Sugar highlights human vulnerability, the need for understanding, and the consequences when something once comforting turns into a burden. The Indonesian Film Censorship Board (LSF) has classified the film for audiences of all ages (SU) (aza)
