Scarlet, the daughter of a medieval swordsman, is consumed by grief and rage after her father is murdered. In her recurring dreams, her attempt at revenge ends in failure, leaving her gravely wounded. In the real world, she encounters Hijiri, an idealistic young man from the modern era, who helps her recover and introduces her to a future free from bitterness and hatred. As Scarlet finally confronts King Claudius the man responsible for her father’s death she is forced to face a profound moral dilemma. Torn between her thirst for vengeance and the voice of her conscience, Scarlet must decide whether to forgive or to continue the cycle of revenge. The film explores identity, emotional healing, and the cost of unresolved anger.


Inspired by Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Scarlet premiered on 4 September 2025 in the non competition category at the Venice International Film Festival. The film was released globally on 12 December 2025, distributed by Sony Pictures. Mamoru Hosoda’s earlier film Mirai (2018) previously received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.The Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (LSF) has classified the film for audiences aged 13 years and above.
