Samsara
Darta (Ario Bayu) is deeply in love with Sinta (Juliet Burnett), yet their relationship faces fierce opposition from their families due to stark social differences. Desperate to overcome these barriers, Darta enters into a forbidden pact with the Monkey King (I Putu Bagus Bang Sada Graha Saputra) through a dark ritual promising wealth and prosperity. After he succeeds in marrying Sinta and starting a family, an unforeseen tragedy strikes, shattering the life he fought so hard to build.
Presented as a silent black-and-white film told entirely through expressive movement, Samsara is set against the evocative backdrop of Bali’s 1930s landscapes and cultural traditions. The film earned nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the 2025 Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA). Earlier, it won multiple Citra Awards at the 2024 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI), including Best Director for Garin Nugroho, along with awards for Best Cinematography, Best Music, and Best Costume Design. The Film Censorship Institution of the Republic of Indonesia (LSF) has rated Samsara for audiences aged 13 and above. (eka)
