Ashitaka (voiced by Yoji Matsuda) is wounded and afflicted with a mysterious curse after battling a boar demon that threatens his village. Seeking a cure, he journeys to Iron Town, ruled by Lady Eboshi (Yuko Tanaka), who is locked in conflict with San Princess Mononoke (Yuriko Ishida) , a young woman raised by the Wolf God and his pack. Believing Iron Town has devastated the forest’s ecosystem, San wages war to protect the spirits of the wild. Caught between both sides, Ashitaka tries to mediate the strife while searching for a way to lift his curse.

Directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, the film sits alongside other iconic Studio Ghibli works such as My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Spirited Away (2001), The Wind Rises (2013), and The Boy and the Heron (2023). Originally released in 1997 as one of the most expensive animated features of its time, Princess Mononoke remains among Japan’s highest-grossing films. To mark Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary, it returns to theaters in IMAX with a 4K remaster (3840 × 2160). Classified by Indonesia’s LSF for audiences aged 13 and above. (sof)
