Maya (Arla Ailani) invites her best friend, Ita (Adzana Ashel), to hike Mount Gede during their school holiday. Ita is hesitant because her parents, Irwan (Teuku Rifnu) and Nurmaidah (Mieke Amalia), usually forbid her from traveling far from home. Strangely, this time her father gives her permission, even though Ita has never climbed a mountain before. During the hike with their group, Ita suddenly gets her period but decides to continue the journey. This is considered a violation of a local taboo, leading to a series of mystical and mysterious events that put Ita’s life in danger.

The film is claimed to be based on a true incident experienced by its main character, Maya Azka, in 2007. In keeping with its story and title, most of the filming took place on Mount Gede, West Java. Petaka Gunung Gede is the third horror film directed by Azhar Kinoi Lubis to be released in 2025, following Pengantin Setan (16 January 2025) and Pengantin Iblis (29 January 2025). The Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (LSF) has classified Petaka Gunung Gede for audiences aged 13 and above. (sof)
