KOKUHO
Young Kikuo Tachibana (Soya Kurokawa), the son of a yakuza gang leader, shows remarkable talent in kabuki, a traditional Japanese theater art known for its striking makeup and elaborate costumes. After his father is killed by a rival yakuza group, Kikuo is adopted and trained by Hanai Hanjiro (Ken Watanabe), a renowned kabuki actor and mentor. As a teenager (Ryo Yoshizawa), Kikuo continues his training alongside Shunsuke Ogaki (Ryusei Yokohama), his close friend and the only son and heir of Hanai Hanjiro. Together, they strive to become the finest kabuki actors in Japan.
Kokuho is adapted from the novel of the same title by Shuichi Yoshida, which spans over 800 pages. The film originally had a runtime of 4.5 hours before being edited by director Lee Sang-il to approximately three hours. Released last year, Kokuho became the highest-grossing non-animated film of all time in Japan. It was also nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Academy Awards 2026. The Indonesian Film Censorship Board (LSF) has classified the film for audiences aged 17 and above. Be discerning in selecting content suitable for your age. (sof)
