Khadam
Melor (Aghniny Haque), a mute woman, lives in an isolated remote village with her ailing mother and her two children, Puteh (Zarra Zaff) and Hitam (Karl El). Meanwhile, Melor’s husband, Awang (Remy Ishak), is away working in the city. Melor’s mother eventually dies under horrifying circumstances after having kept a khadam during her lifetime. The supernatural entity serves its owner, whom it regards as its master and who must regularly provide it with offerings. In return, the khadam protects its master’s family, heals wounds, tends the fields, and can even bring material wealth. However, its service and devotion eventually come at a terrifying cost. As the khadam is an inheritance passed down through generations, Melor must now confront and bear the horrifying consequences herself.
The film marks Indonesian actress Aghniny Haque’s first international project and is a collaboration between Malaysian production houses Red Communications and Komet Productions and Indonesian production houses Magma and VMS. To portray Melor, Aghniny had to learn a form of sign language specifically used in the 1950s, in keeping with the film’s period setting. The Indonesian Film Censorship Institution (LSF) has classified Khadam for audiences aged 17 and above. Be discerning in selecting content suitable for your age. (sof)
