Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), a surgeon at a hospital in Aleppo, Syria, is forced to flee with her daughter Rasha (Massa Daoud) due to the war in her country. They attempt to escape through a smuggler’s vehicle but are captured by a border guard named Mustafa (Yahya Mahayni).
I Was a Stranger, directed by Brandt Andersen, is adapted from the true story of Syrian refugees, depicting the struggles of five families over the course of a single night in the Mediterranean region. The film received the Amnesty International Award at the Berlin Film Festival 2024 and was released in the United States on 9 January 2026.
