Crocodile Tears
Johan (Yusuf Mahardika) lives with his mother, Mama (Marissa Anita), at a remote crocodile breeding sanctuary. Overly protective and deeply attached to her son, Mama believes that a white crocodile she keeps is both her husband and Johan’s father. Johan’s secluded life begins to change when he falls in love with Arumi (Zulfa Maharani), a young woman from outside the community who inspires him to explore the world beyond the sanctuary. Her presence awakens Johan’s desire for independence and a life of his own.As Johan grows closer to Arumi, Mama sees her as a threat and becomes determined to keep them apart. Caught between his loyalty to his mother and his longing for freedom, Johan must make a difficult choice that will shape his future.
Crocodile Tears (Air Mata Buaya) marks the directorial and screenwriting debut of Tumpal Tampubolon. First screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2024, the film received five nominations at the 2024 Indonesian Film Festival, including Best Picture.
